Adventures in Geocaching

When everyone was here for Ollie's blessing, Adam and his mom decided that they were going to create and hide their own geocache. They both have gotten really into doing it and enjoy it, especially if they can go together. They have always experienced finding caches people have hidden, but they have never hidden one themselves. So when our peanut butter ran out, Adam decided to convert the jar into a geocache. He spray painted it, and made it official. His mom was here, so they both figured out together where they wanted to take it. They grabbed a bunch of random toy trinkets we had on hand, and spent one morning with Gabe and Poppa hiking a mountain to hide it. It's been fun for them to see the email/comments from people who have found their cache. I think they both look forward to hiding more in the future. Here are some pictures from it.








The other new thing that we've tried is starting our own trackable. You can buy these official coded items, and place them in a cache. You can give them a goal or an assignment of where you want them to go and what you want them to do. Then when someone finds it in a cache, they can take it with them and try to help it achieve what it wants to do. Adam came home from the store and told me he bought a trackable and he wanted me to figure out what to do with it. We both decided that we wanted it to visit as many big cities that it could. Not only in this country, but others as well. How cool would that be if it made it to another country? Anyway I love it when people take pictures with a trackable so you can see where it went. So it's official goal is to get it's picture taken in as many big cities around the world as it can. Now, we just started it, so it's just been to Reno. :) We bought one of the dog tag trackables, they are only five bucks. (Others are more expensive) Because that's all it is, most people hook it to something as it travels. We had this New York symbol, and hooked it to that. It seems fitting. So we'll see where it goes. We already have a bunch of other ideas for future trackables we want to do. We'll see what happens. Is this not such a fun hobby?
