Hawaii Day 5 (Wednesday)

This is the sight that we woke up to often. Milo talking as he stood up in his crib. It's a lot easier to pull himself up on than at home. The bad thing was to get down, he'd just fall backwards. Silly boy freaked us out. By Wednesday we had this kinda rushed feeling for some reason. We knew the week was winding down, and we wanted to make sure we got what we wanted to done in the time we had left.
Tuesday night it rained all night. So come Wednesday morning things around the island were flooded. Certain streets and bridges up north I guess. The day was the rainiest we had, and put a damper on any swimming or water stuff we considered doing. Driving up north was out of the question. That only left hiking that we really wanted to do, and hadn't yet. We wondered if it'd be really muddy. We hiked around Costa Rica on our honeymoon in the jungle area with the rain and it wasn't bad, so we thought we'd go test it out. I'm glad we did, cause it wasn't as bad as one would think. We were given this guidebook before our trip by the wholesaler. Super nice to have, and we used it ALL the time. It had some good hiking trail info.

Adam stopped on our way to attepmt to get some caches. Jungle searching is a lot harder than he expected. He never found this one.
We really wanted to hike to waterfalls. Most I guess are on private land now or accessed by helicopter. So we did find one in our book that was kinda more secretive. We hiked to the Ho'opi'i Falls. The trailhead is in a neighborhood not many people know about. The book said a local gave them a bad review on Amazon for revealing to tourists where to find this trail, cause people were in their neighborhood. I can't blame them, I'd be annoyed too. So we tried to be quiet and respectful. Even though when we went there weren't many cars.
We liked this trail cause it had the hiking through the jungle feel, and not one part of the trail looked like any of the others. Every part was so different, which was so refreshing. We loved it. It was muddy, but not extreme so we went for it. We loaded on bug spray, cause the book told us to, but because it was so wet instead of humid we didn't have to worry too much about it.
Because of all the rain run off, the normally clean and soft waterfalls were roaring and muddy. On a normal day the locals will swim in these. With the rain runoff they were rapid. We didn't go near them except to take some pics. They were so cool. This is about the time that my camera decided to BREAK! I had this problem with the shutter right before Milo was born. We had to ship it to Reno to pay to have someone fix. It is now doing it again. I no longer have it to take pictures with. It's going out again. It starts taking dark pictures and giving me this warning, then it just won't take pics. I researched, and Canon doesn't fix it well, and it's hard to get it fixed right. Bleh! So you can imagine as I'm trying to take pictures on my vacation, how happy it made me. I truly was tempted to chuck it in the river. I didn't, but now I don't have a camera again. I just need a new one. Not sure when that'll ever happen. So the rest of the trip most of the pictures we took from Adam's phone.
These vines would grow up all the trees. So pretty. There were a ton of roots from the trees along the trail that actually helped while hiking in the mud. We loved the tree canopy we usually had on this trail. I did end up getting blisters from having the wrong socks. Adam got blisters from forgetting his socks. Yes he hiked sock-less.
We hiked for a few miles on this trail and saw the two falls. The second falls we didn't get a good pic of, cause you had to hike down this steep slope to get to it, and we didn't want to with Milo. After we got back to our car we decided to do another trail. We decided we'd try a state park one. We went to go hike the Kuilau Ridge Trail. We went to the trailhead and there was nowhere to park. It was so busy. So we decided to get some lunch and come back. We went to this local pizza place called Brick Oven Pizza. We had heard and read it was so good. It did not disappoint. It was sooo yummy. Thin crust pineapple and ham is what we got. Adam decided that he would want that again before we left. Milo loved it too.
When we went back to the trail it wasn't as busy.
It was a lot different than the first trail. We didn't love the hiking on a muddy road. I guess we'd rather frolic in the jungle. It was a state park, so road trails weren't a big surprise. It was all uphill, which was a nice workout after all the pizza we ate.  The views were SOOO worth it. The pictures don't do them justice, especially being taken by an iPhone. There were so many shades of green. It was crazy. We were huge fans of the show LOST, which was filmed on Hawaii, and a little on this island. So we couldn't help make lost references our whole trip. So many things reminded us of it.
We entertained Milo with a stick. He was happy to hold it and swing it around. We used to do the same thing with Ollie when he was little and we'd hike. Something about little boys and their sticks. It was cute though. He was content. We kept thinking he'd fall asleep, but he didn't for a while.
We found a cache on the trail as well at the 1 mile mark.
It has an amazing view from top.  You hiked 1 1/2 miles to the top of the hill. It was gorgeous. I tried once again posting video, with no luck.
We wish we had brought lunch up there, cause they had some picnic area, and we would have loved a reason to hang out there longer. We started up hiking some more, but ended up turning around since neither of us could hike well from blisters. The trail ended at two miles, so we didn't miss much.
Milo did fall asleep on the way down the hill, still holding his stick.
We weren't quite sure the best way to clean our shoes at the hotel. We tried scrubbing them down, but it didn't work too well. We ended up taking them home with Hawaiian mud still on them.
We headed back to the hotel to clean up so we could go to our Luau dinner. It was supposed to be outside, but since it was the rainiest day, it was moved inside. It was casual and fun. Kay and Jon sat by us, and the couple with their daughter that we met in the airport. Cathy, Brian, and Patty. On the way to the banquet rooms, there was this picture on the wall that reminded us of Jacob's cabin from LOST. It didn't look as run down as in the show, but it still reminded us of it.
The food was a buffet style, and pretty good. More noodles and meat with fresh fruit. They had Poi root that's like Taro that Adam ate in New Zealand. Most people didn't love it. I've tried Taro and didn't love it, so I passed. The Poi was in a pudding form so that made it even less appealing to me. Jon that we sat by couldn't get enough. He was like the only one, so he was teased about it. The locals tease they grow it to scare off the tourists. :) The yummiest thing they had was this awesome pulled pork.

We had the funnest entertainment for dinner. Hula dancers and a fire dancer. The host was hilarious, so it was a fun night. Milo fell asleep so we got to stay for the whole thing. I'll try and post some videos, but I'm not sure it'll work. The Hula girls put on a Polynesian show, with different dances from different places. They had a lot, it was cool to watch. Then the chief came out and did a fire dance. He was this funny old man who did some crazy stuff with fire. Here are some not so great pics of the show. We mainly filmed so we could come home and show Gabe the videos, but once again I can't load videos. So here are the pics.

Kay would hold Milo any chance she got, usually so we could eat our food. So I had to take her picture with him.
